I'm not an island Ep.2 - Addicted

John called his recovery from drug addiction “a rebuilding process. A reclamation process“, and I would add that perhaps it’s also a redemptive measure, or at least an attempt to it. The process he named as “creating the new John“ was the re-pavement of a road he had damaged himself. And that re-pavement, which in the case of an addict is ongoing, takes both time and a lot of hard-work. But if there’s a glimmer of success - and in John’s case, he had much more than just a glimmer - the rewards are incalculable.

“This is kind of a humbling process that we go through, and I haven’t always been a super humble person (…) I may still have elements of ego and vanity, but I have learned to be a humble, considerate, maybe quieter person than I’ve been on the past.

If you can’t get humble, you’re gonna hate the lessons because you’re either going to think they are not for you or that it’s not your fault, but they are for you and it is your fault. And that’s okay.”
